Giuseppe Abbagnale ( Italian: Giuseppe Abbagnale ; born July 24, 1959 , Pompeii ) is an Italian rower who played for the Italian national rowing team from 1976-1995. Two-time Olympic champion, seven-time world champion, winner and winner of many stages of the World Cup.

Biography

Giuseppe Abbagnale was born July 24, 1959 in the city of Pompeii , Italy . He trained at Stabia CN. He trained with his younger brother Carmine , and later the helmsman Giuseppe di Capua joined them.

He made his international debut in the 1976 season when he joined the Italian national team and performed at the World Junior Championships in Austria. In 1979, he started in double oversized at the adult world championship in Bled , but could not get here among the winners.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - in the standings of the steering oar doubles he took the final seventh place.

In 1981, he won at the World Championships in Munich . A year later, repeated this achievement at the world championship in Lucerne . A year later, at similar competitions in Duisburg, he became a bronze medalist in the same discipline.

Being among the leaders of the Italian rowing team, he successfully passed the selection for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles - this time, their double oar crew beat all rivals, and in this way Abbagnale received a gold Olympic award [1] .

In 1985, with his team, he was the best at the World Championships in Mechelen . He took silver at the 1986 World Championships in Nottingham . Won the 1987 world championship in Copenhagen .

At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, he again won the gold medal in steering double overs [2] .

At the 1989 World Championships in Bled , 1990 in Tasmania and 1991 in Vienna, he invariably rose to the top of the podium in his crown discipline M2 +.

In 1992, at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, he became a silver medalist in deuces, losing in the final to the crew from the UK. In addition, at these Games he was entrusted with the right to carry the banner of his country at the opening ceremony [3] .

After the Barcelona Olympics, Giuseppe Abbagnale remained in the main squad of the Italian national team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1993, he added to the track record a bronze award won in doubles at the World Championships in Rachitsa .

In 1995, he played as part of the eights, started at the World Championships in Tampere , but could not get into the number of prize winners and ended his career as a professional athlete.

His other brother, Agostino Abbagnale, also became a famous rower, and won the Olympic Games three times.
