Biography
In 1931 he was expelled from the gymnasium for communist activities. He worked as a forester (1932-1935). In 1935-1939 he studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Tartu . From 1934 to 1941 he worked as a journalist in Rakvere , from 1936 to 1940 - in the newspaper Virumaa Teataja .
During the Nazi occupation of Estonia in 1941-1942 he was imprisoned.
From 1945 to 1947 - editor of the newspaper " Rahva Hääl ", a press organ of the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia. From 1947 to 1950, he edited the main literary magazine of the Estonian SSR “Looming” . Member of the Writers' Union of the Estonian SSR (1947-1950 and 1955-1992).
In 1949, he was awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR.
In May 1951 he was repressed and sentenced to 25 years in prison. From 1951 to 1955 - a prisoner of Vyatlag in the Kirov region . Released in 1955. After returning to Estonia, he worked for a long time as a freelance journalist in Halyal , Tallinn, then settled in Viljandi , and later Kolga-Jaani lived.
In 1966, he was one of the founders of the Estonian Society for the Conservation of Nature.
Creativity
As a prose writer debuted in 1940. The author of many stories and essays, novels, novels, dramas. The main theme of the works is the rural life of Estonians with their human relationships and destinies, the struggle to protect nature.
