The Italian historian Giovanni di Mastro Pedrino (d. 1465) claims that Galeotto I died at the age of 85, and therefore in many biographies the year of birth is 1299. He was probably born much later, around 1315 (based on the date of birth of the children).

Biography

In alliance with his brother and Cardinal Bertrand du Pouget in 1333, he fought with Ferrara , but was captured. Freed, together with his cousin Ferrantino opposed the papal legate. Their troops occupied Rimini, but Ferrantino seized power in the city, deceiving his ally. The war between them ended with the mediation of the emperor Louis IV of Bavaria , who transferred the city of Fano to Galeotto I.

In 1347, Galeotto I invaded the Ancona brand and seized Ancona and Senigaglia. On the outskirts of Fermo, his army defeated Gentile da Mogliano and Lonio dei Simonetti's army, the latter was captured.

In May 1348, an epidemic of plague began in Ascole , fearing a military invasion, the inhabitants called for help from Galeotto I. He gathered an army of Ascolan and defeated Gentile da Mogliano in November of that year near San Severino, seizing many prisoners and large amounts of food. . For a short time, Galeotto I occupied all the cities of Marki, except Fermo.

After that, he ceased hostilities for several years and even made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land .

In 1353, with the support of his brother, he surrounded Fermo and, after several months of siege, took the city.

Cardinal Albornoz was sent to restore order to the Romagna. He won several military victories and forced many princes to obey, among them - the brothers Malatesta. They lost many of their conquests, while at the same time retaining their ancestral possessions — Rimini, Pesaro, Fano, and Fossombrone, and received the title of papal vicars.

Since 1356, Galeotto I is the Gonfaloniere Church with a monthly salary of 300 florins. He opposed Ordelaffy and captured Faenza, the next year - Cesena, in 1359 - Forli. The next few years he fought at the head of the papal troops.

In 1364, he intervened in the war between Florence and Pisa, replacing his nephew Pandolfo at the head of the Florentine militia. In the battle of Kaczyn (10 km from Pisa) defeated John Hockwood , the captain of the Pisans.

In the same year, he inherited his deceased brother ( Malatesta III Guastafamilya ) as papal vicar of Rimini, and reigned along with his nephews - Malatesta Ungaro (Rimini) and Pandolfo II (Pesaro, Fano and Fossombrone).

In 1370 he received in flax from Pope Sansepolkro . The following year, Pope Gregory XI appointed him General of the Church to fight against Bernabo Visconti . In 1373, defeated the army of Barnabo Visconti under Montichiari, in the region of Brescia.

In the same and in 1375, after the death of nephews, he consolidated in his hands all the possessions of the Malatesta family. In 1378, the papal legate approved him by the lord of Cesena.

In 1383, he won from Guido and Polenta Senigallia. In the Equal Diocese, he captured Cervia, Polenta, Culjanello and Bastia.

Family

The first wife, Eliza de la Vilette (d. 1366), had no children.
