Biography
Born in a family of landowners. Supporter of the federalist party. Landowner, served in the army, lieutenant colonel.
In 1844, he was elected Vice President of El Salvador under President General Francisco Malespine Herrera . In that year, Francisco Malespin declared war on Guatemala and left the capital personally leading the army. H. Guzman was appointed Acting President of El Salvador.
On February 15, 1845, H. Guzman carried out a coup d'etat and overthrew Francisco Malespin, most of the capital's inhabitants and part of the general’s small army joined him. To legitimize his government, he organized elections that he successfully won and received official recognition from the authorities of Costa Rica , Guatemala, and Nicaragua .
Then, the ousted president Francisco Malespin, relying on the forces of Honduras , invaded Salvador , but was defeated and killed near San Salvador . The Assembly of Salvador H. Guzman was awarded the title of Division General.
As president, he advocated free elections and in 1848 transferred his post to his successor in a democratic way.
He was elected several times to the legislative assembly of the country, the state council and the prefecture of the department where he lived.
In December 1857 he was elected Vice President under President Miguel Santine del Castillo . Since a year later the president was forced to resign, Guzman again had to act as president of the country.
