In 1907 Swinnerton was elected a member of the Linnaean Society . In 1918-1919 he began to explore the problem of tsetse flies.

In 1937 he was awarded the Order of Saints Michael and George . Heading for the award, he died in a plane crash of the de Havilland Leopard Moth aircraft in Tanganyika on June 8, 1938.
