Story
The main plot line is the fate of two Afghan girls, the young beauty Leila and the “harams” of Mariam. Both are forced to marry, both experience the horrors of war and the nightmare of personal submission to the will of their spouse and society. The pain and resentment that has accumulated over a long time spills out into a desperate attempt to find personal happiness. From rivals, women will turn into friends, sisters and protectors of each other, capable of such strong love, for which it is not scary to die.
Rewards and Success of the Novel
The novel became the New York Times bestseller. More than a million copies were sold in the first week of sales [1] .
