Background

In an interview, Bazilian said: “I wrote [“ One of Us “] one night - [this was] the fastest song I have ever composed, in order to impress the girl. The song worked - now we are married and we have two children. We recorded half of the album “ Relish ” when Rick Chertoff was in and Joan, Rob and together I did the demo “One of Us”, this is a stupid, small demo that I eventually put as a hidden track on the CD of my debut solo album, and played [it] to them. It didn’t even occur to me that Joan [vocals] could be connected to this, but the wise Rick asked her if she thought she could sing this song. It seems to me that it was much better than if he just asked “would you like to sing it”. The answer might not be positive. But she said in the affirmative that she could sing this song, and we recorded a small live demo with guitar accompaniment. When I got into the car and inserted the cassette [with the demo], I immediately began to rehearse the speech that we were supposed to make at the Grammy " [1] .

Song Subject

The song is devoted to various aspects of faith in God, raising before the listener questions about what would happen when he met the Almighty, for example: “Could you turn to Him [God] by name” or “Would you want to see him if it required you to believe in heaven, in the Savior, in saints and in prophets ? ”

The album version of the song begins with the first four lines of the song entitled “The Aeroplane Ride”, written on October 27, 1937 by American folklorist Alan Lomax and his wife Elizabeth for the archive of American folk song at the Library of Congress , with Mrs. Nell Hampton of Salayersville , Kentucky , singing a 1928 variation of John S. McConnell's anthem Heavenly Aeroplane [2] [3] .

Music video

A music video was shot for the song, a duet of directors Mark Seliger and Fred Woodward. The video, for the most part, takes place on Coney Island , showing various attractions of the place, such as a roller coaster , Ferris wheel and New York aquarium , alternating with vintage sepia shots, as well as Joan singing in front of the camera.

Criticism Reviews

Music critic Roch Parisien of AllMusic called the song “a simple, straightforward statement about faith, honest, unadorned, framed by an almost perfect chorus and a delightful guitar riff in the style of Neil Young ” [4] . In 2007, the composition took 54th place in the list of “100 greatest songs of the 1990s” according to the VH1 channel [5] , as well as 10th in the rating of “40 greatest songs of performers of one hit, 1990s” of the same channel [6] .
