Biography
The main early medieval historical source reporting on Theophylact I is the Chronicle of the Dukes of Benevento, Salerno, Capua and Naples . It reports that he gained power over the Duchy of Naples in 666 after the death of Basil . Probably Theophylact I, like his predecessor, was a native of Naples . Since the Duchy of Naples was part of the Italian possessions of Byzantium , for approval in office, the new duke had to obtain the consent of Emperor Constant II [1] [2] .
Very little information has been preserved about the reign of Theophylact I. It is only known that during this duke in Naples the mint continued to function, producing coins with portraits of Emperor Constant II and inscriptions in Latin and Greek [1] [3] .
According to the Chronicle of the Dukes of Benevento, Salerno, Capua and Naples, Theophylact I ruled the Duchy of Naples for four years and died in 670. His successor in office was Cosma [1] [2] .
In church traditions, Saint Gaudiosis of Salerno is called the son or nephew of Duke Theophylact I. However, since he died no later than 649, this is unlikely [4] .
