The main types of cultivated insects
Silkworm
Domestic silkworm caterpillars are grown for silk production. In the process of creating a cocoon, the caterpillars emit elastic fiber, which is used by humans for the production of various types of tissues .
Honey bees
Bee products include honey , beeswax , bee bread , bee stalks , propolis , royal jelly , bee venom and others. Bee products are mainly used for food, but beeswax has many other uses.
Lacquer Worms
Varnish worms secrete a gummy substance called varnish. Varnish is used in a variety of ways, from eating it to producing dye and wood finishes. Most of the varnish production falls on India and Thailand, where more than two million people are employed in the industry.
Cochineal
Producing a red dye known as carmine , cochineal is included in a large number of product manufacturing, ranging from cosmetics, food, paints, fabrics, etc. About 100,000 insects are needed to make one kilogram of paint. The hue of the red dye depends on how the insect is processed. France is the world's largest importer of carmine.
Crickets
Among hundreds of different types of crickets , homemade crickets ( Acheta domesticus ) are the most common type used for food. Cricket is one of the most nutritious edible insects, and in many parts of the world, crickets are used fried, baked , deep-fried and boiled . Crickets can be used in the form of flour, which is a powder from dried and ground crickets and is easily integrated into many recipes. Crickets are usually grown not for human, but for animal food, as they provide many nutrients for many species of reptiles, fish, birds and other mammals that consume them. Crickets are usually killed by deep freezing, where they do not feel pain and are calm before a neurological death.
Worm Worms
Wormworms are the larvae of the wax moth. These caterpillars are widely used around the world for food, bait, animal testing and plastic degradation. Low in protein but high in fat, they are a valuable source of fat for many carnivorous organisms. Wax worms are popular in many parts of the world, due to their ability to live in low temperatures and ease of production [1] .
Cockroaches
Cockroaches became a growth area in China in the early 2000s.
