Biography
Born in Naples on August 26, 1911 in the family of composer and Dora, nee Zampini. He received his musical education at the San Pietro a Mayella Conservatory in Naples, where he studied composition with his father, playing the piano with Sigismondo Cesi and Luigi Finizio, playing the organ with . In 1934-1935, his string quartet in E minor and Overture for the play The Barren Efforts of Love by William Shakespeare received . In February 1939, on the stage of the San Carlo Theater , the premiere of the first opera of the composer "Imaginary Sick" on the libretto by Mario Gizalberti based on the Moliere play of the same name took place. The composition was approved by the public and criticism. In 1943, Napoli wrote his second opera Curious Incident on the libretto of the same author based on the play of the same name by Carlo Goldoni , which premiered in 1950 at the Novita Theater in Bergamo . In 1946, the opera of the composer Poverty and Noble, based on the eponymous comedy by Eduardo Scarpetta, was staged at the San Carlo Theater in Naples.
In 1951, his opera Mazanello about a national hero won second place in the competition in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Giuseppe Verdi , organized by the La Scala Theater in Milan . The jury included composers Igor Stravinsky , Arthur Onegger , Giorgio Federico Ghedini and Victor De Sabata . Napoli is the author of several other operas: Fishermen (1954), Treasure (1958), Rosary (1962), Poor Devil (1963).
The composer paid much attention to restoring the folk songs of the Campania region. He also completed editions of opera works by Neapolitan composers Domenico Cimarosa , Niccolo Piccini and Giovanni Paisiello . In addition to writing, he was engaged in teaching activities. For some time he taught at the music school in Cagliari . In 1955-1962 he led the Conservatory of San Pietro a Mayella. In 1962-1971 he headed the conservatory in Milan . Then, from 1972-1975, the Conservatory in Rome . In 1978 he returned to Naples. In the 1960s he was engaged in educational activities. He became a member of the Academy of Saint Cecilia and the High Council on Antiquities and Fine Arts. In 1975 and 1978 he headed opera houses in Rome and Naples. He died in Ashea, in the province of Salerno, on October 19, 1994. In the same province, in Cava de Tirreni , the Jacopo Napoli Music Academy was opened.
