About Min Geun ( cor. 오민근 ; born August 15, 1962 , Seoul ) - Korean boxer , representative of the featherweight category. He was a member of the South Korean boxing team in the late 1970s, the silver medalist of the Asian Championships, the winner of the silver medal of the World Junior Championships. Biography
About Min Geun was born on August 15, 1962 in Seoul , South Korea .
Amateur career
He first made himself known on the international stage in the 1979 season, when he joined the South Korean national team and attended the first held World Junior Championships in Yokohama, from where he brought the silver dignity award won in the semi-lightweight category - he was stopped in the decisive final match Soviet boxer Yuri Gladyshev [1] .
In 1980 he became the silver medalist of the Asian Championship in Bombay , here in the featherweight final he was defeated by the Mongol Ravsalyn Otgonbayar [2] .
It was considered as the main candidate for participation in the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow , however, South Korea, along with several other Western countries, boycotted these competitions for political reasons.
Professional career
Having not been given the opportunity to speak at the Olympics, O left the location of the South Korean national team and already in August 1980 made his successful debut on a professional level. Having gained three victories, he went to the Philippines to box with the local champion of the Eastern and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) in the second bantamweight, but lost to him on points in twelve rounds, thereby suffering his first defeat in his professional career.
Continuing to actively enter the ring, in 1983 O Min Geun became the South Korean champion among featherweight professionals, and then won the OPBF champion title.
Thanks to a series of successful appearances, in 1984 he was awarded the right to challenge the introduced world lightweight champion title according to the International Boxing Federation (IBF) - he defeated another challenger from Indonesia Joko Arter by knockout in the second round and took the championship belt for himself.
The title O managed to defend twice. He lost it in November 1985 as part of the third defense, losing by technical knockout in the fifteenth round to compatriot Jung Gi Young .
Subsequently, he performed in boxing three more times, ending his career as a professional athlete in 1987. In total, he spent 21 fights in the pro ring, of which 16 won (including 6 ahead of schedule) and 5 lost.
