Biography

Born November 19, 1962 in the city of San Carlos , Western Negros , Philippines .

He made his debut in boxing at a professional level in February 1982, having won against his rival by unanimous decision in six rounds. For a long time he did not know defeats, he soon won the title of champion of the Philippines in the first flyweight category, and in 1983 he received and defended the title of champion of the Eastern and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF).

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to challenge the IBF world title in the first flyweight title and went to Japan to box with another challenger, Satoshi Singaki . Penyalosa turned out to be stronger, in the eighth round, the Japanese recorded a standing knockdown, from which he could only recover at the expense of “eight”, and in the twelfth round he scored a victory by technical knockout.

Penyalos managed to defend his championship belt three times, after which he decided to rise to the lightest weight category and left the title vacant, refusing to carry out official defense in October 1986. Instead, he attempted to claim the World Boxing Association (WBA) world title, but lost the reigning Panamanian champion Hilario Zapate by unanimous decision, thus losing his first professional career.

Despite the loss, Dodi Boy Penyalosa continued to actively enter the ring and in February 1987 won the IBF world flyweight title by beating TOC Korean Xi He Sop by technical knockout. However, already in the framework of the first defense, he lost this championship belt, having been defeated by knockout from another representative of South Korea, Choi Chan Ho .

Having won several more victories in ranked matches, in 1989, Penyalosa went to box in the UK with local IBF world title holder Dave Macaulay . The confrontation between them lasted all the allotted 12 rounds, as a result, the judges unanimously gave the British victory.

Subsequently, he remained an active professional boxer until 1995, although he did not take part in title fights anymore. In total, he spent 42 fights in the pro ring, 31 of them won (including 13 ahead of schedule), 7 lost, in three cases a draw was recorded, while in one case the match was declared invalid.

After completing his sports career, he worked as a boxing trainer, in particular, he was the personal trainer of the titled Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire [1] .

His younger brother, Jerry Peñalosa, also became a well-known boxer, owned the WBO world lightweight champion title. He has three sons - two of them, David and Dodi Boy the Younger, followed in the footsteps of his father, becoming boxers [2] [3] .
