Biography
The son of a miller. He graduated from Riga Real School. In January 1914, he voluntarily entered the service of the Russian Imperial Army . He served in the Pechora 92nd Infantry Regiment , stationed in Narva .
After the outbreak of World War I, he went to the front. In September he was sent to study at the Petrograd Alexander Military School , which he graduated in February 1915. For some time he served in the 24th reserve battalion, then in the 25th reserve battalion. In July 1915 he was appointed company commander of the Tiflis 15th Grenadier Regiment . In December, he was awarded the rank of second lieutenant. Later - the battalion commander. In 1916 - a lieutenant.
In 1917 he was transferred to the service at the headquarters of the division and corps. In December 1917, after the October Revolution , he left the service in the RIA.
During the First World War he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir IV degree, the Order of St. Stanislav II and III degree, the orders of St. Anna II, III, IV degree. Having left military service, he lived in Moscow , the Tver province and Petrograd . After the conclusion of the Brest Peace in May 1918 he returned to Latvia, where he settled with his parents.
In December 1918 he entered the armed forces of the Provisional Government of Latvia (later joined the Latvian army ). He served as an officer in the 1st Latgale regiment. In the first major battle near Lielauce, he was seriously wounded in the shoulder. Evacuated to the hospital in Liepaja , later sent for treatment to Germany. Returning to his homeland, he continued treatment. At the conclusion of the doctors, he was found unsuitable for further service at the front and was appointed assistant chief of the General Staff.
In November 1919, Captain G. Rosenstein became the creator and head of the foreign intelligence department.
In March 1920 he received the rank of lieutenant colonel . From September 5, 1920 to January 1921, he was a military attaché in Germany.
In April 1921, he was again appointed head of the intelligence department. In 1924 he graduated from the Higher Officer Courses. Several times served as the chief of the operational department of the headquarters of the Latvian Army . At the same time he taught at the Higher Officer School.
In 1926 he was awarded the 1st degree Cross of Liberty of Estonia .
In 1926-1928 he studied at the Czechoslovak Military Academy. Since November 1928 - Colonel . In December 1932 he was awarded the Aizsargs Merit Cross .
In May 1934, took part in a coup in Latvia . In September 1935, he was appointed to the post of head of the Higher Military School. In November of that year he became a general . In September 1937, as part of the Latvian military delegation, he observed the exercises of the Red Army in Belarus.
In October he was appointed chief of the General Staff of the Latvian Army . After the Soviet troops entered Latvia in August 1940, the NKVD was arrested and transferred to Moscow.
Mentioned in a special report by V. N. Merkulov to I. V. Stalin about the J. Bach case dated 7.04.1941 with the interrogation protocol attached, as one of the organizers of espionage against the USSR [1] . July 9, 1941 was sentenced to death . Shot on July 30, 1941.
