Biography
Francois Pompon was born into a cabinetmaker's family. Already at the age of 15, Francois joined the company in the production of monuments and tombstones. He became a marble carver.
In the early 1870s, he entered the National School of Decorative Arts in Dijon , where he studied animal painting under Pierre Louis Rowland .
After moving to Paris, he worked as an assistant to Auguste Rodin .
Glory to Francois Pompon came only at the age of 65 due to the stylized polar bear he created, which was marked at the Autumn Salon exhibition of 1922 in France.
His huge marble sculpture is reproduced in the garden of Darcy, in Dijon. The original, also known as The Calm White Bear, is located in the Orsay Museum in Paris.
