As a student at the Polytechnic School in Paris , he founded the Social Democratic , Catholic movement Le Sillon in 1894 with the same - minded people , whose main goal was to reform the Catholic Church, bring it closer to republican ideals, offer workers alternatives to the anti-clerical and materialistic left movements, reconcile workers and Christianity. The Le Sillon Movement published a self-titled magazine in which Sagnier proclaimed the belief that Christianity was not contrary to the ideals of the French Revolution .

In 1899, Le Sillon magazine became the organ of a broad public movement of popular education, around which the working youth and sons of noble families gathered to reconcile the working class with the Church and the Republic. Using Catholic patronage, Sangier created popular public institutions in 1901, in which public lectures were given. At the 1905 national congress, nearly a thousand districts from all over France were represented.

However, Pope Pius X issued an encyclical in November 1910, in which he condemned Le Sillon , as a result of which the movement ceased to exist.
