Biography

He graduated from the English department of the Faculty of Philology of Leningrad State University (1955) and graduate school in the department of foreign literature (1958). In 1958-1961 he worked at the GPB . In 1961-1964 he served in the Soviet Army (translator). In 1964-1987 he taught at the Leningrad Institute of Soviet Trade . In 1967 he defended his thesis ("Satirical and moral journals of Addison and Style and the literary polemic of their time").

  Since 1988 - employee of IRLI (chief researcher of the Department of Pushkin Research, then head of the Dostoevsky Group).  In 1990 he defended his doctoral dissertation ("Russian literary collections and periodicals of the second half of the XVIII century").

Main topics of scientific interest: the history of Russian and English literature of the XVIII century, the relationship of Russian and foreign literature, the work of A. S. Pushkin and F. M. Dostoevsky . A number of articles are devoted to the refinement of bibliographic descriptions in the "Consolidated Catalog of the Russian Book of the Civil Press of the 18th Century, 1725-1800" - attribution of anonymous translated publications. Articles were published in the editions of the Pushkin House "XVIII Century", "Dostoevsky. Materials and research ”and others. V.D. Cancer, as a member of the editorial board and author of comments, takes part in the publication of academic full works of Pushkin and Dostoevsky.
