International scientific name

Penicillium soppii K. Zaleski , 1927

Description

Colonies on agar Chapek up to 5.5 cm in diameter on the 14th day, velvety to almost woolly, covered on top with loosely arranged vegetative hyphae, sparingly sporulating in light gray-green tones. Exudate is plentiful, in the form of large yellowish droplets. The reverse is light gray, with a reddish-brown or wine-gray tint; amber pigment is sometimes released on Wednesday.

It forms mild sclerotia 50-60 microns in diameter, then pinkish, up to 200-300 microns in diameter.

On the 14th day, on CYA colony, about 6 cm in diameter, abundantly spore-bearing in blue-green tones, with cinnamon reverse, emit a very pale amber pigment on Wednesday. Exudate in the form of numerous light yellow droplets.

On malt extract agar (MEA), the colonies are velvety to almost woolly, spore abundantly over the entire surface, without exudate. The reverse is light yellow, soluble pigment does not stand out.

Conidiophores are two-tier, extending from substrate hyphae, usually 300-450 microns long, smooth-walled or barely rough, almost always without lateral branches and brooms. The metulae in the final whorl are 3-7, 10-14 microns long, equal, usually without swelling at the apex. Phialides are parallel, 8-10 microns long. Conidia from spherical to widely ellipsoidal, smooth-walled, on average 3–3.2 × 2.4–2.8 μm.

Differences from close species

It is determined by light pink sclerotia and light green sporulation, smooth or slightly roughened below the conidiophores with a whorl of equal not swollen mules, unequal in shape and size of conidia, and pale reverse of the colonies. Penicillium miczynskii is distinguished by smaller conidia and a bright yellow reverse on апapek agar. Penicillium raistrickii is distinguished by smaller conidia and rough conidiophores.

Ecology

Widespread, mainly soil fungus. Psychrotolerant species, often isolated from mountain and high latitude soils, as well as from coniferous forest soils.

Taxonomy

The species is named after the Swedish microbiologist Ulaw Johan Sopp (1860-1931), a penicillin researcher.
