Biography
Henry Alexandrovich Shapiro was born into a Jewish family. Educated at the Grodno gymnasium and at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy . At the end of the course in 1876 he was sent as a doctor to the army during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877β78 . Then he was appointed resident of the clinic of Professor Eichwald . In 1880, Mr .. for the dissertation "On fluctuations in blood pressure under normal and pathological conditions" (St. Petersburg) was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Then he was elected a privat-docent of the Academy (1885) in the Department of Internal Medicine and from the same year began teaching at the Clinical Institute of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna as an assistant.
In 1896 he was appointed senior assistant of the therapeutic department, and in 1897 - professor there. Shapiro's works and studies, mainly related to heart diseases, diabetes insipidus, liver and malignant tumors, were published in special medical journals. Part of his lectures is set out in his work on βRecognition of Heart and Vascular Diseasesβ (St. Petersburg, 1889).
He lived in St. Petersburg with his wife Sofia Vladimirovna in house number 9 on Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street [1] .
