In late 1898 or early 1899, Juan Tepano accompanied King Simeon Riro Kayng to Valparaiso . The king wanted to express dissatisfaction with the Chilean government over the activities of the company Williams-Balfour, which owned most of the land on Easter Island annexed to Chile. Also, the Rapanuiites planned to join the Maipol regiment of the Chilean army in order to take part in the Pacific War . However, shortly after his arrival, the king began to abuse alcohol heavily and soon died. By 1901, after serving in the Chilean army, Tepano returned to Easter Island. In 1902, he was appointed the village headman. In April 1911, officers of the Chilean naval corvette Baquedano tried to declare him king of Easter Island, but not one of the islanders, including Tepano himself, took this ceremony seriously. In the years 1914-1915, Juan Tepano assisted the expedition of the English anthropologist Catherine Routledge . After that, he helped the Swiss anthropologist Alfred Metra, who visited Easter Island between 1934 and 1935. Juan Tepano died on November 8, 1947 at the age of 80.
