Biography

Born in the family of a graduate of the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at St. Petersburg University , a teacher of the Vilna rabbinical school Solomon Vladimirovich Lande and Khristina Ilinichna Lande. In 1889 he graduated from the Minsk gymnasium.

In 1889-1894 he was a student at the medical faculty of Tomsk State University , participated in the student movement, became acquainted with Marxism. From the university was expelled for political unreliability. Due to the threat of arrest, he left Russia in 1894, studying social sciences in France . Returning to Russia, he studied from 1896 at the Law Faculty of the University of Novorossiysk ( Odessa ), which he graduated in 1900 [1] . Subsequently - professor of Novorossiysk University.

In the 1890s he was a legal Marxist . The outcasts had never been, in his words, “a social democrat in the party sense of the word,” but until 1904 “he maintained contact with local social democratic organizations” [1] . Since 1902, having become disillusioned with Marxism , he became an employee of the liberal weekly journal Yuzhniye zapiski. Participated in the creation of the Union of Liberation , collaborated with a number of liberal publications. In January 1906 , at the 2nd congress of the constitutional democratic party , he was elected to the Central Committee (1906-1918), in which he joined the right wing. In 1909 he was a member of the collection " Milestones ".

After the October Revolution, he participated in the underground publication of the newspapers “Struggle” and “Our Century”, calling for armed demonstrations against Bolshevism . In November 1918, arrested; in January 1919, released at the request of M. Gorky . In September 1919, he was again arrested, in September 1920, seconded from a concentration camp to the scientific and technical department of the Supreme Economic Council, and then released in March 1921. In August 1922, he was arrested again, released in October. In November 1922 he was exiled to Germany [1] .
