Biography
Born on November 27 ( December 9 ), 1896 in Yekaterinoslavl in the family of an assistant pharmacist.
In 1906-1914 he studied at the Tashkent gymnasium . In 1914 he converted from Judaism to Orthodoxy ; He arrived in Petrograd , where he met with I. Ye. Repin and began to often visit his estate Penates ; subsequently called himself a student of Repin.
In 1915 he entered the Faculty of Law of the University of Petrograd . In September 1916 he was enrolled in the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at the Academy of Arts , but was expelled in January 1917; in September 1917 he was reinstated in the school, but already in November of the same year he stopped classes for health reasons.
In 1918-1920 he worked as a drawing teacher at Tashkent High School; at the same time, he performed in the concert troupe of the Syrdarya military commissariat.
In November 1920, he was sent to continue art education in Moscow and Petrograd. He studied in Moscow Vhutemas (1920-1923) under D. N. Kardovsky . After in 1922 he performed the portrait of the Maly Theater actor A.I. Yuzhin-Sumbatov , he began to receive new orders in the theatrical environment, which largely determined the fate of the artist. In 1923, he took part in the last (18th) exhibition of the Union of Russian Artists .
In 1924 he emigrated from the USSR to Germany, then moved to France. For some time he studied vocals in Florence, with Tito Ruffo . Having an excellent baritone, later on he repeatedly performed on the professional stage.
In the period 1925-1932 he was repeatedly exhibited in Paris salons; participated in Parisian exhibitions of Russian artists in the gallery Quatre-Chemins (1928), Salle Yteb (1932). In 1928, he donated his paintings to the Committee for Assistance to Russian Writers and Scientists.
In January 1933 he moved to New York ; In 1941 received American citizenship.
M. A. Verbov worked mainly as a portrait painter. He painted and pencil portraits of artists, musicians, statesmen and public figures: M. A. Aldanova , I. A. Bunin , D. S. Likhachev , A. F. Kerensky , F. I. Chaliapin , A. T. Grechaninov , S. A. Kusevitsky , K. A. Korovin , S. Yu. Zhukovsky , E. G. Gilels , N. Gedda , L. V. Sobinov , A. Morua , E. Vuillard , Ingrid Bergman , Ecumenical Patriarch Athenogen, kings Ferdinand I, Gustav V of Sweden , Juan Carlos of Spain, Duke of Alba, Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, etc.
During the Second World War, he created 100 portraits of US Marines for their mothers. In 1973-1975, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of US independence, he executed 56 portraits of members of Congress who signed the Declaration of Independence .
Verbov's solo exhibitions were held in New York galleries en: Knoedler (English) (1936), Wildenstein (1941, 1945) and en: Grand Central Palace (English) (1954), at the Birmingham Museum, pc. Alabama (1969), and the Auburn Museum, pc. New York (1976 and 1982). In 1982, he received a gold medal from the League of American Artists for a portrait of I. A. Bunin. He taught painting at Columbia University in New York and other universities.
Since 1973 - corresponding member of the Academy of Fine Sciences in Rome.
In 1974, 1977 and 1979 He visited the USSR, met with his sister. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition at the mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York; in October of the same year he was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship .
Died April 4, 1996 in New York . He was buried in the Russian cemetery in Novo-Diveevo (New York) .
His works are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Tretyakov Gallery .
