Monument to Rasul Gamzatov in front of the Russian Theater

Created in October 1925 by decision of the People's Commissariat of Dagestan. The professional scene opened on October 9, 1925 with the performance “Woe from Wit” according to A. S. Griboedov [1] .

In 1926, at the invitation of the People's Commissar of Education of Dagestan, Alibek Takho-Godi, the theater was headed by Honored Artist of the RSFSR N. Sinelnikov (1855-1939), who worked in Makhachkala for the winter season of 1926/27 [2] .

In 1936, the theater received the name of M. Gorky [1]

From 1952 to 1958, the main director of the Dagestan Russian Drama Theater. Gorky was honored artist of the DASSR, People's Artist of the DASSR Israel Moiseevich Sapozhnikov (1898-1980) .

The performances staged by I. M. Sapozhnikov were distinguished by their vivid embodiment, they had constant success with the viewer, entered the theater’s repertoire for a long time, and were imbued with the spirit of socialist realism. For fruitful creative activity in art, I. M. Sapozhnikov was awarded medals and diplomas of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the DASSR .

From 1976 to 1983 he worked as a director at the theater, and from 1981 to 1983 he was headed by Mikhail Rabinovich [3]

The new theater building was erected according to the project of the architect K. Chkheidze, who realized his work in Makhachkala at the suggestion of the outstanding Dagestan metal artist Manaba Magomedova . She also made foyer chandeliers [4] .

The directors Felix Berman , Nikolai Parasich , the artist Eduard Puterbrot (in 1985-1993 the main artist of the theater) collaborated in the theater.

Since 1993, the theater has been led by Skandarbek Tulparov [5] [6] [7]
