History
In the XIX century, the overwhelming majority of the population of Novozybkov were Old Believers and despite the fact that the city had three single-faith churches that were in communion with the official church, the Orthodox (the so-called "Nikonians") were attributed to the parish of the Lyudkovsky Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary [1] .
In 1860, the Chernihiv diocesan authorities created a committee in the city to raise funds for the construction of a new Orthodox church, which was headed by the merchant Mikhail Umanets. Donations managed to raise only 2,000 rubles, so the merchant and his wife invested 30,000 rubles in silver with their own money in the construction. In 1867, the temple was founded. Its consecration took place on February 16, 1896, but construction work continued until 1898 [2] .
In 1937 the church was closed, but after a few years, during the German occupation, it was reopened and was no longer closed [3] . In the late 1950s, restoration work was carried out in the temple. In 1982-1983, the cathedral was painted inside. Since 1996, a children's Sunday school has been operating [2] .
Architecture
The temple is cross-shaped, with short rectangular sleeves. The eastern sleeve is complemented by a semicircular altar apse . The main volume of the temple is crowned with an octagon with a faceted dome and a cupola. Old Russian architectural motifs are traced in the decor [4] . The temple is connected by a passage with a three-tier bell tower. The temple area, with a total area of 6946 m², is surrounded by an old forged fence on a stone base [2] .
