Biography
The exact origin of Geoffrey de Mandeville is unknown. According to one version, his family came from the town of Maneville in Cotantin , in the territory of the modern Department of the English Channel . On the other - from the town of Mandeville-en-Bessin in Bessin , in the territory of the modern department of Calvados .
Little is known about the biography of Geoffrey de Mandeville. He took part in the Norman invasion of England in 1066 and distinguished himself at the Battle of Hastings . For this, Geoffrey received from King William the Conqueror extensive possessions in England, numbering about 180 manors , mainly in Essex , as well as in ten other counties of England . The residence of Geoffrey de Mandeville was the castle of Walden , built in the northern part of Essex . Geoffrey was also named the first after being conquered by the Constable of the Tower of London , as well as the sheriff of London and Middlesex . These posts were of great importance in the Anglo-Norman monarchy , as they allowed to control the largest city in the country. The positions of the constable of the Tower and the sheriff of London and Middlesex acquired a hereditary character and later descendants of Geoffrey de Mandeville were appointed to them. It is possible that Geoffrey was also the sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire .
Other information about the life of Geoffrey was almost not preserved. It is only known that around 1085 he founded a monastery in Harley , Berkshire , and died around 1100 .
Marriages and children
- Married first to a certain Adeleise , from whom Geoffrey had at least two children:
- the daughter of Beatrice , who married the late son of Eustachius II , Earl of Boulogne , and
- William de Mandeville’s son (d. between 1105 and 1116 ), Constable of the Tower and Sheriff of London , whose possessions and positions were confiscated by King Henry I , possibly due to complicity in the escape of Ranulf Flambard from the Tower. William was married to Margarita, daughter of Edo Dapifer , Seneschal of England, from whom he had a son, Geoffrey de Mandeville , 1st Earl of Essex (d. 1144), who became famous during the period of feudal anarchy in England in the 1140s .
- Geoffrey's second marriage was married to Leselin , from whom he had no children.
