Biography

Ghazandyan graduated from Harvard Dental School in 1905 . From 1922 to 1939 , as a professor, he worked in the field of “maxillofacial surgery” and became the first scientist to receive a degree in plastic surgery at the Harvard Medical School. He was the first in the United States to publish books on plastic surgery.

After the death of his father in 1891, the twelve-year-old Varazdat was hired as a commodity accountant. After working for a couple of years as a clerk at the central post office of Samsun, he decided to emigrate to the States.

At first, he fell in love with the city of Worcester with its cable factory. True, not for long, until he properly learns the language. To do this, he began to attend evening courses. And having reached a decent level, he easily entered the Dantistri School at Harvard, having graduated from which, he had the right to work as an “assistant to a dentist”.

It occurred to Varazdat to deal specifically with the upper jaw, no one could understand why it was necessary to open a separate clinic. A few months later, Dr. Kazanchyan’s patients demonstrated to their friends and relatives the restored “maxile corps”, creating the author the well-deserved fame of the first, in fact, specialist in the field of plastic surgery of the face.

In 1915, the French government turned to Harvard University with a request to select a group of orthopedists to transfer them to hospitals deployed by the Entente in warring Europe.

Kazanchyan ended up in the south of France, where he worked in a hospital called Yankees. Kazanchyan, having organized a separate specialized clinic near the hospital, took all his patients there. For two years, together with the staff, he operated on about 2.5 thousand wounded, remained in Europe until the 18th year and was nicknamed “Wunder Surgeon”.

The French government, as well as the King of England, George Fifth personally, presented Kazanchyan with the awards of their states.

Since 1925, he taught his own course at Harvard, while working as a visiting physician-visitor in clinics in different states. For fifty years, he collected trophies - copies of the bones left after operations made of plaster. All five thousand exhibits are periodically displayed in the “Kazanchyan Hall” of Harvard University.
