Qualification Rules

There are 16 teams in the CONCACAF League:

  • from Central America - 13 teams,
  • from the Caribbean - 3 teams.

Central America

The 13 seats for the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) are allocated to seven UNCAF member associations as follows: two places each for Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and El Salvador and one place for Belize.

In all national championships of Central America, a separate season is held with two championships in one year, so the following teams have the right to participate in the CONCACAF League:

  • From the Costa Rican Championship - the champion with the worst aggregate result and the team, not the champion, with the best aggregate result. If a team is a champion in both parts of the season, then the team qualifies, not the champion, with the second best cumulative result.
  • From the championships of Guatemala , Honduras , Panama and El Salvador - the champion with the worst cumulative result and the team that lost in the final playoffs, with the best cumulative result (or the team that lost in the finals of both parts of the season). If a team is both a champion with the worst cumulative result and a team that lost in the final playoffs, with the best cumulative result, then the team that loses in the final qualifies with the worst cumulative result. If the same two teams became playlist finalists in both parts of the season, then the team that loses the playoff semi-final qualifies with the best overall result.
  • From the championship of Nicaragua - both champions. If a team is a champion of both parts of the season, then the team that qualifies for the best cumulative result (or the team that loses in the finals of both parts of the season) qualifies.
  • From the championship of Belize - the champion with the best aggregate result (or the team, which is the champion of both parts of the season).

If teams from a Central American association are excluded, they are replaced by teams from other Central American associations, which are determined by the results of previous CONCACAF Champions League draws. This season, two teams from Guatemala were excluded due to the suspension of the membership of their federation in FIFA and were replaced by additional teams from Panama and Honduras [2] .

Caribbean

Three participants from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) are determined through the Caribbean Club Championship , a subcontinental tournament open to the clubs of all 31 CFU member associations. To qualify to participate in the Caribbean Club Championship, teams must finish in the previous season of the national championship champion or take second place, but professional teams can also be chosen by their associations if they play in a league in another country.

The teams that take second, third and fourth places in the Caribbean Club Championship qualify for the CONCACAF League.

Notes
  1. ^ Guatemala: On October 28, 2016, FIFA suspended the membership of the National Football Federation of Guatemala due to interference with its activities by the Government of Guatemala. Until the suspension was removed, the teams of Guatemala were not allowed to participate in international competitions [3] . CONCACAF set a deadline of May 1, 2017 to cancel the suspension, otherwise Guatemalan clubs would not be allowed to participate in this season's tournaments [4] , and, after FIFA did not restore Guatemalan federation, on May 6, 2017 Guatemalan clubs were excluded from the draw [5] . The two Guatemalan clubs that qualified for the 2017 CONCACAF League were:
    • Antigua Guatemala is the champion with the worst aggregate result in the 2016/17 season ( aperture 2016 );
    • “ Guastatoya ” is the finalist of the 2017 Clausura .
In addition, Municipal (2017 Klausura Champion and 2016 Aperture Finalist), the best cumulative champion in the 2016/17 season, in the CONCACAF 2018 Champions League was replaced with Erediano , which was the first to qualify for the 2017 CONCACAF League from Costa Rica place. As a result, the three vacant seats were replaced by clubs from Costa Rica (Santos de Guapiles), Honduras (Olimpia) and Panama (Chorrillo), which were included in the 2017 CONCACAF Wild Card League on the results of the speeches of the Central American associations over the past five years, which gave Honduras and Panama three places [6] [7] [8] .
  2. ^ Costa Rica: The Wilde Card place redistributed from Guatemala to Costa Rica was taken over by a non-champion with the second best cumulative result in the 2016/17 season - Santos de Guapiles [9] .
  3. ^ Honduras: The Wilde Card place, redistributed from Guatemala to Honduras, passed to the semi-finalist with the best aggregate result in the 2016/17 season - Olimpia [10] .
  4. ^ Panama: The Wilde Card place redistributed from Guatemala to Panama passed to the semi-finalist with the best aggregate result in the 2016/17 season - Chorrillo [11] .

The draw determined a pair of 1/8 finals (with numbers from 1 to 8) between clubs from baskets 1 and 2, each of which contained eight clubs. Baskets A and B contained locations in the grid with numbers from 1 to 8, corresponding to each pair. Clubs from basket 1 were assigned locations in the grid from basket A, and clubs from basket 2 - locations in the grid from basket B. Clubs from the same association could not make a pair in the 1/8 finals, except for the clubs that passed through Wildcard That replaced clubs from Guatemala [13] .
