Biography
Born in the family of the artist Julius Gübner and his wife Paulina Bendeman, sister of the artist Eduard Bendeman .
After graduating from the Dresden Gymnasium, he studied at the Dresden Technical University , then from 1857 he studied chemistry at the University of Gottingen , where in 1859, after defending his thesis "On Acrolein", he became a doctor of science. He worked with Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg and Friedrich Kekul , in Ghent , where he replenished his knowledge in the field of organic chemistry .
Since 1863 - a habilitated doctor, continued teaching at the University of Gottingen. From 1870, as an assistant professor , from 1874 until his death in 1884, as a full professor and director of the General Chemical Laboratory (Chemical Institute) (until 1882, together with Friedrich Wöhler ). After the death of Woler (1882), he continued to lead the institute until his untimely death at the age of 46 due to a heart attack .
In 1865-1871, together with F. F. Beilstein, he edited the specialized chemistry journal Zeitschrift für Chemie.
Member of the Gottingen Academy of Sciences , the Royal Society of London and the French Academy of Sciences.
