Biography
Catherine Dagmar Eckardt was born on May 3, 1966 in the city of Friedrichroda in the country of Thuringia in the family of a dance teacher. After graduating from high school in 1984, where she was an active member of the Free German Youth Union , she began to study Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig , which she left in 1988 [4] .
Having begun her political career in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the late 1980s, she joined the political organization Democratic Breakthrough , which mainly united Protestants who advocated democratic socialism and against the SED government, and then - into Union 90 "(Teamed up with the Greens), a member of whose leadership in Thuringia was in 1990-1993. She has been a member of the Bundestag since 1998. Together with Jürgen Trittin, she was a candidate from the Greens in the 2013 Bundestag elections [4] .
In addition, since 2009 he was chairman of the cathedral of the Evangelical Church of Germany ; in 2013, resigned from this post [4] .
In 2016, Catherine Dagmar Goering-Eckardt insisted on tightening sanctions against Kremlin officials and Russian oligarchs, and also demanded to minimize the meetings of the FRG leadership with Russian President Putin . In an interview with the German newspaper Bild , she said the following:
“Politicians must finally put pressure on Russia to introduce a no-fly zone (over Syria). But to begin with, it is necessary to stop these friendly visits to Mr Putin ... Secondly, it must be classified as a war crime and, accordingly, the use of anti-bunker and barrel bombs ... the Government of Germany should begin the process of adopting new sanctions against Russia for its barbaric actions in Syria ... After Moscow and Washington failed to agree on a ceasefire, Europe should take on greater responsibility ” [5] .
In the 2017 parliamentary elections in Germany, she was, along with Jem Ozdemir , the leading candidate from his party.
In August 2018, before the meeting between Angela Merkel and Putin, Catherine Dagmar Goering-Ekkardt made the following statement in support of the Ukrainian film director and writer Oleg Sentsov :
“Merkel should make it clear that continuing to hold Sentsov as a political hostage is unacceptable. If he is not released soon, this will lead to an extremely sharp deterioration in relations between Russia and Europe ” [6] .
