Early life and education

Dubé studied at St. Mary's College, where he first became interested in theater, the rehearsals of which took place in the historic Hall of Jesus in the school building. In high school he studied at Westminster School.

Career

Dubé began to write plays in his youth. His play Le Barrage was staged by a theater club in 1955. [1] Soon he could already earn his living as a writer. He founded the Young Scene group and at the Drama Festival Domignon in 1953 received several awards for the play “On the Other Side of the Wall”, which later became known as the “ zone” . [2] The play is still popular, studied in schools and continues to be performed on the Canadian stage [3]

Over the next five years, Radio Canada presented, on radio and television, more than 30 of his plays (many of which he later adapted for the theater). In all, Dubé created more than 300 works for radio, television and the stage. [4] He wrote mainly in French; some of his works have been translated or subtitled in English. [five]

Dubé was an activist in various French language movements in Quebec; he was first secretary and then president of the French Language Council. [6]

In February 2001, he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada , [7] and in 1993, an officer of the Order of Quebec .
