Co's parents, a businessman father and mother library specialist, moved to the United States from Korea in the 1960s. From an early age, Jennifer Co was a constant winner of various music competitions, including the first prize at the I International Tchaikovsky Youth Competition in 1992 and the second prize (the first was not awarded) two years later at the adult Tchaikovsky Competition ; Russian music critics praised Ko extremely highly - in particular, Peter Pospelov noted:
In Cesar Franck's sonata, the violinist aroused general admiration not only for her amazing, varied sound, but also for her absolute mastery of the structure, and Tchaikovsky 's Reflection sounded so fresh, as if half of the participants were not playing this play at all. The charm and chaste immediacy of the performer were simply stunning, combined with confidence in technique and scenic behavior: even the formidable theme of the medieval Dies irae sequence, on which Eugene Izai's sonata is based, stood at the behest of the fearless mistress's bow. In the game Jennifer Koch there is not the slightest sign of manifestation, aggressiveness, non-conformism. We are not afraid to say that the art of the young violinist fits completely into the clear, integral, internally consistent image of the classics, which in the last decade has been created by the industrial culture that has chosen Pepsi. But this does not mean that a genuine emerald cannot lurk in a beautiful box neatly tied with a ribbon and decorated with, for example, the inscription “Tchaikovsky”. [2]
In the future, Jennifer Co did not break ties with Russia: for example, the Fourth Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Andrei Eshpay was dedicated to her, and Co was his first performer in St. Petersburg in 1996 , and then performed it in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory at an anniversary concert to the 75th anniversary of the composer [3]
After graduating from Oberlin College, Jennifer Co continued her education at the Curtis Institute under the supervision of Jaime Laredo ; in the late 1990s she also managed to take a few lessons from Felix Galimir .
Co's repertoire is increasingly leaning toward 20th-century music: among her recordings are violin concerts by Bela Bartok , Karol Szymanowski , Bohuslav Martinou , works by Arnold Schoenberg , Giancarlo Menotti .
