The name of the city means “a small and protected bay, a small harbor ” ( Greek μανδράκι, μαντρικι , Latin mandraculum from ancient Greek ά μνδρα “corral, stall, fence”).

At the highest point of the Mastrakion is located the Venetian fortress of Nisyros. The castle was built by the Hospitallers in 1315. Inside the castle is the monastery of Panagia Spiliani ( Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Σπηλιανής ), built around 1600.
