Biography

Soledad Mexico was born on August 13, 1899 in La Noria , Sinaloa , Mexico , at Benigno and Refugio Bonillas. She was the youngest of two daughters. At age 20, she married Juan Mexico, a carpenter who built scenery for theater and opera in Mazatlan . The newlyweds lived for some time in Los Angeles and Phoenix , but always returned to Sinaloa . Soledad moved to the southern district of San Diego forever in the early 1960s, living with her children until she moved to a nursing home in 2011.

She had seven children, 24 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and she lived most of her life in San Diego , California , United States . She was a housewife, loved to cook, sing and watch Spanish soap operas on TV.

Because of its longevity, Los Angeles scientists associated with the Gerontology Research Group , UCLA, and Stanford University took blood samples from Mexico and her family members as part of a study that compared genes from long-livers with a control group. They looked for genes that protect against common deadly diseases.

Health and Death

In the spring of 2010, she received a leg wound. Since the wound did not respond to antibiotics, in July of that year, her leg was amputated below the knee.

On August 30, 2013, Mexico died of respiratory failure seventeen days after its 114th birthday at a hospice in Chula Vista , California .
