DOT No. 179 is a long-term firing point located near the village of Vita-Pochtovaya and included in the first line of defense of the Kiev fortified area .
Construction
Bunker No. 179 was built in the early 1930s according to an individual project and belongs to the type “mine” [1] (also “mine group” or “fire group” ), one of four similar types in KiUR . The bunker is embedded in a hill of an ancient fortification and consists of one three-chamber casemates for easel machine guns and an observation post (NP). Kazemat and NP are connected by a network of underground loss galleries [2] with a length of about 230 meters. In these poterns, facilities for rest of a permanent garrison (35 people), warehouses of provisions and ammunition are equipped. In the "mine" there was no shelter for field-filling units (the so-called variable garrison), which would have been to cover the structure at close distances from the actions of enemy assault groups. DOT No. 179 included a special anti-chemical shelter and therefore belongs to the “B” type fortifications, has the resistance class “M1” , that is, it is able to withstand 1 hit of a 203-mm howitzer in its casemate [3] .
The “Mine Group” covered the highway to Vasilkov with its fire. The volume of its underground part is disproportionate to the only machine-gun casemate . According to researchers, during the design of the structure in the early 1930s, there was still no experience in using such bunkers. Therefore, this design can be considered as experimental [3] .
Service
The fortification structure took part in the Patriotic War and organizationally was included in the 6th battalion defense area (BRO) of the KiUR, covering the Yurovka - Vita-Pochtov area . During the first general assault on KiUR , which was launched by troops of the 29th Wehrmacht army corps on August 4, 1941, the bunker had combat contact with the enemy from the very first minutes of the enemy offensive. On the same day he was destroyed. During the phase of the positional war , which went near Kiev in August-September 1941, the ruins of the bunker were in the rear of the Germans [4] .
Modernity
Poterny bunker number 179 survived. After the war, memorial signs to the Red Army defenders of Kiev were installed on the hill of the bunker.
