Biography

Born in the family of the Swedish king Adolf Fredrik and his wife Louise Ulrika of Prussia . My mother was the granddaughter of King of Prussia Frederick William I of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Niece of Frederick the Great .

Her brother, the Swedish king Gustav III, unsuccessfully tried to tie her in marriage with the Duke of Vilhem Oldenbursky or the King of the Commonwealth Stanislav Augustus Ponyatovsky .

Sophia Albertina was very attached to her mother, especially when the widow queen was removed from the Swedish court by her own son, King Gustav III, after she publicly accused his wife of adultery . Sophia Albertina lived at the court of Louise Ulrika of Prussia and was under her strict control until her mother's death in 1782.

At the age of 14, thanks to the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great became the coadjutor of the monastery in Quedlinburg . In October 1787, after the death of her aunt Amalia of Prussia, she became abbess of Quedlinburg Abbey .

Most of the time since 1790, holding the post of abbess, she spent in Sweden. In 1803, the monastery was secularized and departed in favor of the Prussian kingdom (income and rights, however, were retained by the abbey).

Sophia Albertina was his last abbess of Quedlinburg Abbey .

Sofia Albertina as a child

In September 1803, Sophia Albertina returned to Sweden. She was respected by the new Swedish royal dynasty Bernadotte as the last representative from the Vasa House at the Swedish court, she was very close to the new royal family.

Sophia Albertina was never married. The last years of her life she spent in solitude in the palace built for her, where she lived since 1794. According to her will, the palace went to the crown prince (at that time, Prince Oscar, the future king Oscar I ).

She died in Stockholm on March 17, 1829 and was buried in the church of Riddarholmen , the tomb of the Swedish monarchs.

She was a member of the Academy of St. Luke . In 1788, the main church of Landskrona was named after her - the Church of Sofia Albertina.
