Great Shvakshty

Big Shvakshty ( Belorussian. Vyalikiya Shvakshty ; also there are variants of the names Big Shvakshta [2] and Great Shvakshty [3] ) - a lake in the Postavy district of the Vitebsk region of Belarus . Refers to the Stracha river basin . It is part of the Shvakshty hydrological reserve belonging to the Narochansky national park.

Description

The lake is located 22 km southwest of the town of Pastavy and 8 km northwest of Lake Naroch .

Several streams flow into the lake, one of which flows from Belogolovoye Lake. Lakes Big and Small Shvakshty are connected by channels.

The surface area of ​​the lake is 9.56 km², length - 4.2 km, the greatest width - 3.4 km. The coastline is 13.05 km. The greatest depth is 5.3 m, the average is 2.3 m. The volume of water in the lake is 22.3 million m³. The catchment area is 94.2 km².

The lake is located in the basin of the residual type. The slopes are sandy , gentle, up to 6 m high, overgrown with shrubs, in the northern part are wooded. The coastline is relatively flat. The shores are low, 0.2-0.3 m high, mainly sandy. The western shores are peaty , boggy. The bottom is flat, lined with sapropel , along the east coast to a depth of 2 m sandy.

The pond is slow flowing, eutrophic . A strip of surface vegetation extends into the depths of the lake up to 150 m. Algae- harophytes reach a depth of 3.5 m.

The lake is home to pike , perch , roach , tench , rudd , silver bream , ide and other fish species.

Security

By the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus dated September 25, 1996 No. 631 “On the Establishment of the Republican Hydrological Reserve“ Shvakshty “” a hydrological reserve was created, which included the Lakes Big and Small Shvakshty [4] . Currently, the Shvakshty reserve is part of the Narochansky National Park [5] .

Recreational Use

Bolshoi Shvakshty Lake is a part of the water tourist route “Narochanskoe Koltso” [2] .

On the shore of the lake there are several tourist sites and recreation facilities. Paid fishing is allowed on the lake [6] .
