Biography

Ivan Troitsky was born on June 23, 1858 in the village of Volgapino (now the Kovylkinsky district of Mordovia). In 1872 he studied at the Krasnoslobodsky Theological School , from where he moved to the Penza Theological Seminary , which he successfully graduated in 1878. In the years 1881-1882. Trinity attended lectures on the Hebrew language at the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at Imperial St. Petersburg University . In 1882, he completed his education at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy [2] [3] .

In 1894, he took up the post of assistant editor in the "Church Gazette", where, among others, he published many of his works [2] . In addition, he worked in the scientific and theological journal Christian Reading , where you can also see many of his articles on theology [3] .

In 1885, I.G. Troitsky defended his thesis for a master's degree in theology, which was entitled " Religious, social and state status of Jews during judges " (published in St. Petersburg , 1885; revised edition, St. Petersburg, 1886) [2 ] .

In 1904, Ivan Gavrilovich Troitsky received his doctorate in theology for his dissertation entitled “ Talmudic doctrine of the posthumous state and final fate of people, its origin and significance in the history of eschatological concepts ” [2] .

On January 16, 1905, Troitsky became an ordinary professor , and since 1910 he was an honored ordinary professor in the department of the Jewish language and biblical archeology of St. Petersburg University [3] .

In 1913, Troitsky participated in a theological examination of the Beilis Case from the defense [4] [5] [6] ; together, the commission included the Hebraist P.K. Kokovtsov , the Moscow state rabbi Yakov Mase , and also professor P.V. Tikhomirov , who proved the absurdity of accusing Jews of consuming blood for ritual purposes [7] .

In 1914, Professor Troitsky received the Makariev Prize for his work under the title "Biblical Archeology" [3] .

After the October coup , from July 10, 1918, Ivan Gavrilovich Troitsky began to act as vice-rector .

From 1919 to 1922, Troitsky was a freelance employee of the state institute of medical knowledge (now the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov ), where he headed the library [3] .

On May 16, 1920, Ivan Gavrilovich Troitsky was accepted as a researcher at the Russian Public Library , where he headed the Department of Oriental Languages . December 15, 1928 he was relieved of his post due to health reasons with the appointment of an academic pension [3] .

Ivan Gavrilovich Troitsky died on March 10, 1929 and was buried in the Nikolsky cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra [3] .

Troitsky was a member of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society [3] .

The merits of the scientist before the fatherland were awarded the Orders of St. Stanislav of the 2nd and 1st degree, the Order of St. Anna of the 2nd degree and the orders of St. Vladimir of the 4th and 3rd degree [3] .
