Description

M1 is classified as an interstate highway - connecting the road network of Armenia with the road network of another state and providing movement on roads to another country [2] . The length of the road is 384.3 km. It passes through the following cities: Masis , Artashat , Areni , Yeghegnadzor , Goris , Kajaran , Agarak . Connects Yerevan with the cities of Erash , Goris and Meghri , goes to the Iranian-Armenian border. A section of the road between Goris and Kapan was built back in Soviet times. A complete reconstruction of the M2 road is planned as part of the North-South construction project, with an estimated cost of $ 1 billion [3] [4] .

Tigranashen Curve

On the border of Vayots Dzor and Ararat regions, the M2 road rises into the hill, passing the Ararat plain . From a height of 800 m, the road passes through Paruyr-Sevak (1170 m) and Zangakatun (1650 m). This part of the road is called the “Tigranashensky Curve” or “Karkinsky Curve” by the name of the village called the Armenians of Tigranashen, and the Azerbaijanis - Karki . The connecting link between the two regions is the Pochuk gorge, following the Tigranashensky curve. In mountainous areas, sometimes this road freezes [5] , and sometimes in winter it even becomes impassable [6] .
