Systematics

The species was described in 2002 and named after the Dutch prince Bernard [2] . Until 2016, it was included in the genus Callicebus , however, according to the results of molecular genetic studies, Byrne and colleagues were transferred to the genus Plecturocebus [1] .

Locals who were shown a photograph of this primate in order to find out its habitat called it “zogzog” [3] [4] .

Description

The sides and chest are dark orange, the back is grayish-brown, the tail is black with a white tassel at the end [5] . The body length is about 94 cm, including a tail 56 cm long [5] .

Distribution

Endemic to Brazil . It occurs between the rivers Tapajos and Madeira . The ranges of related species Plecturocebus bernhardi , Plecturocebus cinerascens, and Plecturocebus hoffmannsi in this area may overlap. Perhaps also found in the reserve of Alta Flores in the state of Mato Grosso [6] .

Population Status

In 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature assigned this taxon the conservation status of Least Concerns (LC). Significant threats to the population were not identified [6] .
