Biography

Born April 15, 1943 in the city of Leninakan (Armenian SSR).

He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad University (1967) with a degree in Astronomy and his graduate school (1970).

Since 1970, the head. Department of Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations at Kalmyk University (Elista), Associate Professor.

From 1980 he worked at Leningrad State University (SPbSU), from 1983 until the end of his life the head Department of Astronomy, in 1994-2007 Director of the Astronomical Institute. V.V.Sobolev SPbSU .

Candidate dissertation: “On the expansion of planetary nebulae” (1973). Doctoral dissertation: “New methods for the analysis of stellar catalogs and uneven time series” (2000). Professor (2002).

Research interests: astrophysics, astrometry, history of astronomy.

Author (co-author) 136 works, including 8 teaching aids and monograph “Analysis of astrometric catalogs using spherical functions” (2017).

Awards: medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland", II degree (1999); Gratitude of the President of the Russian Federation (2005); Breastplate “ Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation ” (2006); Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I degree (2014).

By the decision of the IAU of October 2, 2003, the minor planet No. 17356 was named VITYAZEV.

He performed with concerts as a pianist at St. Petersburg State University and at the Pulkovo Observatory. He was engaged in the study and promotion of the musical heritage of William and Carolina Herscheli.

Died 07/15/2018 in St. Petersburg.
