George Wells Beadle ( born George Wells Beadle ; October 22, 1903 ; Wahoo , Nebraska - June 9, 1989 ) is an American geneticist, the author of the hypothesis "one gene - one enzyme" [6] .

In 1926 he graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln , and then Cornell . In 1931-1936, an employee of the California Institute of Technology . In 1937-1946 he was a professor at Stanford University . In 1946-1961, professor, head of the Department of Biology at the California Institute of Technology .
In 1961-1968, President of the University of Chicago . In 1968-1982, Director of the Institute of Biomedical Research of the American Medical Association .
The author of works on cytology and genetics , as well as research in the field of genetic control of metabolism , physical and chemical bases of heredity . Comprehensively investigated (in experiments with maize , Drosophila fly and neurospore fungus ) the nature and function of genes , established the ability of bacteria to reconnect foreign genetic substances with their own.
