Carillon

Carillon (carillon, FR. Carillon ) - a mechanical musical instrument , common in Europe and usually installed on belfries or municipal buildings. The instrument contains at least 23 bronze bells that strike alternately or chords . The traditional carillon is played using the keyboard , which is a set of levers that are punched, as well as the pedal keyboard. The levers with the help of wire rods are connected with the languages of the bells, allowing the performer to change the volume of the note depending on the force applied to the key.

The instrument is one of the heaviest, second only to the wind organs . The heaviest carillon in the world is located in New York 's Riverside Church , its bell set weighs 91 tons [1] .

The instrument can operate automatically through a music drum with pins, the location of which determines the time and height of the notes played. When the drum rotates, the pins actuate levers that are connected with the bells, due to which the specified melody is performed. Such a drum can be connected to the clockwork , which makes it possible to play short melodies before the clock strike.
