History

Folk tradition ascribes the foundation of the monastery to Stefan Nemani and St. Sava . Above the western entrance, it is written that the monastery was founded in 1219, but the inscription itself was made only in 1879. The settlement of Liplé was mentioned in 1273 [1] , but the monastery itself was mentioned only in the second half of the 15th century in the commemoration of the monastery of Dobrun , where the names of the Liplian monks were listed. The commemoration itself was lost on April 6, 1941 during the German bombing of Belgrade . In 1576, the ordination of the priest of the Liplian monk Elijah was mentioned [2] .

At the beginning of the 17th century, a scriptorium operated in Lipla. According to the scribe Daniel, in 1615 the monastery was inundated, destroying it to the ground. Ten monks and four clerks died in the water, only three managed to escape. It is possible that this record does not refer to the Liplé monastery itself, but to its method in the canyon of the Bistrita River , because this would mean that the monastery church was built after 1615, which in turn contradicts scientific research. This point of view was shared by Professor Svetozar Dushanich [2] .

At the end of the XVII century, during the Great Turkish War , the monasteries of Liplé and Stuple were destroyed by the Turks. Their brothers escaped to the Slavonic monastery Orahovitsa . They also transferred to Orachowice books from their monasteries, where they were kept until the 1991 war [2] .

Unlike Stuple, Liplé was not completely abandoned. In the XVIII-XIX centuries, the monastery church was used as a parish. In 1858, permission was granted to repair the temple, but the repair work itself began only in 1867 and continued until 1879. Then the dedication of the church was changed from St. Nicholas to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1922, a massive bell tower, demolished in the 1980s, was attached to the western facade. During World War II, the church was damaged by bombing [2] .

In 1965, the Liplanskii monastery was restored. In 1984, the next reconstruction of the monastery was completed. On August 9, 1998, the Serbian Patriarch Paul consecrated the new building of the monastery [1] .
