Sergei Mikhailovich Shik (August 7, 1922 - January 15, 2018) - Soviet geologist, Deputy Chairman of the Bureau of the Commission for the Study of the Quaternary , member of the Bureau of the Interagency Stratigraphic Committee (MSC), co-chair of the Regional Interagency Stratigraphic Commission (RSMC) in the center and south of the Russian Platform. The largest specialist in the geology of stratigraphy and paleogeography of the Quaternary period of the European part of Russia [1] .

Biography
Born on August 7, 1922 in the city of Sergiev (modern Sergiev Posad ), Moscow region [2] in the family of writers Mikhail Vladimirovich (1887-1937; priest since 1926) and Natalia Dmitrievna (1890-1942; daughter of D. I. Shakhovsky ). He was the eldest of five children. Father was repressed and shot at the Butovo training ground on September 27, 1937 [3] .
The family moved from Moscow to the city of Maloyaroslavets in 1931.
In 1939, he graduated with honors from high school and entered the geological and soil faculty of Moscow State University .
In the summer of 1942 he worked on an expedition on the border of Kazakhstan and the Orenburg region, then he moved to the city of Sverdlovsk , where Moscow State University was evacuated. In the spring of 1943 he returned to Moscow from evacuation.
In 1943 he was drafted into the Red Army, studied at the Tula machine gun school, then graduated from a one-year course at the Moscow Military Engineering School.
In 1944 he was sent to the post of long-range aviation platoon commander at an airfield near the city of Minsk . Until 1946, he served in the battalion of airfield services in Belarus and Poland.
In 1947 he graduated from Moscow State University.
He took part in medium-sized geological surveys of Ryazan, Kaluga, Bryansk and Smolensk regions. He was the head of the cartographic party, led the preparation for the publication of geological maps.
Since 1954, participated in all meetings on the study of the Quaternary period .
Since 1961, he worked in the Geological Administration of the Central Regions (GUSR) of the RSFSR - a geologist, party leader, chief geologist of the geological survey expedition of the GSSR.
In 1972-1983, he was the chief geologist of the Moscow Integrated Exploration Expedition.
In 1974 he defended his thesis at the Geological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences on the topic “Roslavl interglacial deposits of the central part of the Russian platform” [4] .
In 1983-2002 he worked as the head of the Stratigraphic Party. For a long time he was the chief geologist at the Center of Geology Department, and worked in Aerogeology.
He organized geological excursions near Moscow for the 8th International Carbon Congress (1975), the 11th INQUA Congress (1982) and the 27th session of the International Geological Congress (1984). He organized guided tours of meetings on the regional glacial formations: Smolensk (1964), Voronezh (1985).
He supervised the preparation of the Quaternary Geology sections in the Russian Coal Encyclopedia (2004-2007) and in the Russian Geological Encyclopedia.
He died on January 15, 2018 in Moscow.
