History
The commune is named after Saint Mevenn (Mein) of Breton , a monk who preached Christianity in Brittany in the 7th century. On the territory of the commune after his death, the abbey of Saint-Mein was founded. At the beginning of the 9th century, the abbey was destroyed by the troops of Charlemagne , restored, but then completely destroyed at the beginning of the 10th century during the Norman raids. The second time the abbey was founded at the beginning of the XI century, 2 km from its former place. During the French Revolution , like most other abbeys, it was closed and his property nationalized.
Since 1918, the commune became known as Saint-Mein-le-Grand, to differ from the commune of Saint-Mein in the department of Finister .
