Biography
Pole. Born into a peasant family. He graduated from the 3rd Warsaw Gymnasium. He studied drawing in the Warsaw drawing class ( Klasa Rysunkowa ) [2] (1867–1870) from Constant Hegl and Rafal Hadziewicz , in the workshop of sculptors F. Zengler and A. Prushinsky. In 1872, with funds from the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw, he continued his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in a full-scale class in sculpture (1872–1878). Pupil A. R. Boca , N. A. Laveretsky and I. I. Podozerov . During his studies at the Academy, he consistently received all the award medals of the IAH: a small silver medal for sketching the composition “The Feast of Belshazzar” , a large silver one (1873) and a monetary award for sketching the composition Yaroslav the Wise gives the people laws , a small silver one (1874), a small golden Medal (1875) for the program "Death of Acteon . " In 1877, for the program of the bas-relief "Venus represents Cupid on Olympus" was awarded a large gold medal , receiving the title of class artist of the 1st degree and the opportunity to travel abroad as a pensioner of the Academy of Arts . In 1875, he went abroad as a pensioner of the Academy; worked in Vienna , Munich , Paris , Florence , Rome . Traveled through France, Germany, Italy. In 1881, for the statue "Gladiator in the Arena" (1880) was awarded the title of academician. Exhibited his work at academic exhibitions (1881, 1884, 1890, 1891). Participated in the All-Russian Art and Industrial Exhibition in Moscow (1882). In 1891 he was awarded a gold medal at the international art exhibition in Berlin for the sculptures "The Dancing Slave" and "The Gladiator in the Arena". He received the title of professor (1890). [1] He was also a corresponding member of the Academy of Knowledge in Krakow .
At the academic exhibitions (1882-1888) the following works of art were presented: the portrait of Liszt (bas-relief), the sketch for the monument to Jan III Sobieski , the bust of the artist Stankevich, “Wandering lights” , “Bayan” (marble band), “Gladiator in the arena” ( bronze statue), Despot-Zenovich bust (marble), “The dancing slave” (bronze statue). In addition to easel, he worked in the field of monumental sculpture, performed a number of tombstones. Participated in the competition for the monument to Adam Mitskevich in Krakow (1880–1890), helped in the construction of the monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky for the project of M. O. Mikeshin for Kiev (cast in metal the statue of a hetman in St. Petersburg, 1888).
In 1894 he returned to Warsaw (according to other sources, he worked in Warsaw since 1897 [3] , or lived in Warsaw since 1899 ). Director of the Warsaw Art School ( 1904 - 1915 ), in 1906 - 1915 the director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He lived in Ukraine (1915-1924). Since 1924, Director of the Wojciech Gerson Private School of Fine Arts in Warsaw [3] .
Since 1897 - a full member of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Warsaw ("Zakhenta"). Participated in the World Exhibition in Paris (1900). He combined his creative activity with the work in the foundry, which he founded in Warsaw in 1901.
The works of P. Velionsky are kept in the National Museum in Warsaw , the National Museum in Krakow , the Tretyakov Gallery , the Russian Museum , the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts and others.
Creativity
The author of statues in an academic manner and figure compositions mainly on historical, mythological and religious themes, tombstones (for example, on the tomb of Adamina Potocki on Powazki in Warsaw), reliefs (epitaph to Vladislav Syrokomle in the church of St. John in Vilno , 1908 ), sculptural portraits, medals.
Among the most famous works of Wielensky are the sculpture "Gladiator" ( 1880 ; many replicas made in various materials), the statue "Prometheus" ( 1896 ) in the Presidential Palace in Warsaw. A monument to Cardinal Yuri Radziwill is erected in the Wawel Cathedral , and in the Cathedral in Plock there is a monument to Bishop Michal Novodvorsky of the work of Velensky.
In 1886, a monument to the poet Jozef Bogdan Zaleski , known as Boyan’s group, depicting a blind Ukrainian singer playing the harp and hearing his boy , was erected in the Kraków Plants Park . The sculpture was created Wielenski in Rome at the expense of landowner Constant Volodkevich. [four]
A white marble statue of a gravestone on the tomb of the Korevo family in a cemetery in the village of Rumbonis ( Alytus district ), created by Velensky, is included in the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Lithuania as an object of regional significance, code 7664 [5]
The project of the monument to Vladislav Syrokomli (relief, bronze) and the portrait of the sculptor's daughter (relief, marble) are kept in the Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius. [6]
