Biography
He studied at the Paris School of Fine Arts under the guidance of Jules Etienne Ramet and Auguste Dumont .
He received the Great Roman Prize in 1847 for the statue of Telemacus , carrying the urn of Hippia with the ashes. Spent five years in Italy as a pensioner at the French Academy .
Returning to his homeland in 1854, he lived in Paris , engaged in the creation of portrait busts and idealistic sculptures in a classic spirit.
Of his works the most famous are:
- the sculpture group "The Childhood of Bacchus " (1863, located in the Louvre Museum),
- Statue of Despair (1868, Orsay Museum ),
- two caryatids on the facade of the Paris National Library,
- Lalande statue on the facade of the Louvre Museum,
- Day sculpture group (at the Paris Observatory ),
- bas-reliefs “Providence” and “Wakefulness” (on the Tremuy pavilion, adjacent to the Tuileries Palace ),
- "Justice among the laws", a bas-relief in the building of the Parisian court and the group "Lyric Drama", decorating the facade of the Paris Opera .
- bust of the poet Beranger
He was buried in the cemetery of Montparnasse .
