Biography

Born in Vologda in the family of a teacher of the Vologda gymnasium on February 1, 1814.

He graduated from the Vologda gymnasium. In January 1830 he entered the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University as an official student.

In 1833 he graduated from the university with a candidate’s degree and was appointed a teacher of history and statistics to the Vologda gymnasium. He entered the professorial institute of the Imperial University of Dorpat, but in October 1833 "taking into account both poor health and the plight of the family" was expelled [1] .

At the end of January 1836 he became a member of the provincial statistical committee. Subsequently, the head of this committee. Conducted teaching sessions with teachers of city and district schools, taught teachers teaching methods.

On January 25, 1838, he was approved by the inspector of the gymnasium, in which he continued to conduct classes in history, statistics and Greek.

On August 7, 1852 he was appointed director of the schools of the Olonets province.

Thanks to F.N. Fortunatov, a women's school was opened in Petrozavodsk in 1861.

In 1863, retired, moved to Moscow.

In 1868, Mr .. He began to print in the "Vologda diocesan sheets" of his "Memoirs of His Grace Archbishop Irenaeus," but their printing was suspended by order of local spiritual censorship. He published articles in periodicals of Vologda, Petrozavodsk, Moscow and St. Petersburg. His works on pedagogy and local history “What should be a mentor”, “Sources of success of moral education in public institutions”, “Historical note on the fiftieth anniversary of the Olonets gymnasium”, “On ancient Russian costumes in the Gryazovets and Solvychegod counties of the Vologda province” are known.

He died in Moscow on November 18, 1872, was buried in the cemetery of the Alekseevsky monastery [2] .
