Biography

Rudolf Loewenstein was born on February 20, 1819 in the city of Breslau in a Jewish family, but at the age of nine he was baptized [3] and since then has not changed Lutheran religion [4] [5] . He studied at the gymnasium in Glogau , then at the university of his native city, from where he transferred to Berlin University . In 1843 he defended the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy [6] .

R. Lowenstein, , D. Kalisch ,

His first works were published in the journals of Silesia as early as 1836, when Leuvenstein was a student, but he really made himself known in the literary field in 1846, after his collection of songs for children under the title “ Der Kindergarten ” was released [7 ] [5] .

In 1848, together with (1819–1883) and David Kalisch (1820–1872), R. Lowenstein founded the political satirical weekly journal Kladderadatsch in Germany (literally translated into Russian - Tram-Tararam ) published in German and became one of the editors of this publication [5] ; the work in Tram-Tararama brought the author the greatest fame. The publication was so successful that it lasted almost a hundred years, but since 1923 (decades after the founders died) the publication began to support Adolf Hitler and National Socialism by publishing anti-Semitic cartoons and texts, then in 1944, when the impending collapse of the Third Reich became apparent, its release was discontinued [8] .

During the Revolution of 1848-1849 in Germany, Leuvenstein incurred the dissatisfaction of the authorities with his publications and was forced to leave Prussia, but already in 1850 he returned to the capital of Germany and continued to work in the journal; in total, he gave Kladderadatsch about 37 years [9] . In 1887, he almost completely departed from public life [10] .

Rudolf Loewenstein died on January 6, 1891 in the city of Berlin and was buried in a local Protestant cemetery.
