For Chibnell, this series was the first in the production of which he acted as chief scriptwriter and executive producer, replacing Steven Moffat , who left the project after the tenth season , in both positions. Also, with the release of “Women Who Fell to Earth”, the third production era in the history of the revived series began - the “Cibnell era” (by analogy with the Russell T. Davis era and the Moffat era is named after the show’s project runner). In addition, for the first time in the history of the show, the series “Doctor Who” was released on Sunday, before that episodes were traditionally shown on Saturday.
The series featured the Thirteenth Doctor , played by Jodie Whittaker . Bradley Walsh , Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill played the new satellites (Graham O'Brien, Ryan Sinclair and Yasmin Khan respectively). Sharon D. Clarke, Johnny Dixon and Samuel Outley appeared as guest stars in the series.
Unlike most episodes, “The Woman Who Fell To Earth” does not have a splash screen.

Story
Ryan Sinclair suffers from dyspraxia , which is why he cannot learn to ride a bike, despite the support of his grandmother Grace and her second husband Graham. After another unsuccessful fall, Ryan throws a bicycle off a cliff, which is why he has to go downstairs to find him. While searching for a bicycle, the young man sees a glowing figure appear in the air right in front of him. When he touches it, there is suddenly something big in the shape of a bulb on the ground. Ryan calls the police, and his old school friend, Yasmin "Yas" Khan, arrives at the scene. Meanwhile, Grace and Graham are traveling by train to Sheffield, when the train unexpectedly stops. Both and one more passenger, Karl, see how a strange sphere flies across the carriages, as if consisting of electric tentacles. The object shoots energy arrows at them and then disappears. Ryan, having received a call from relatives, goes to the train with Yasmin. While the Doctor suddenly falls through the ceiling of the carriage in which they are located.
Despite the fact that the Doctor only restored the memories, she decides to investigate the incident. Ryan, Grace, Graham and Yas decide to help the Time Lord, and Karl chose to forget about what happened and ran away. Ryan talks about the onion and even shows the place where she fell, but it turns out that someone else found it and took it away. It also turns out that a DNA bomb was implanted into a part of the body next to the clavicle of each of them and it is not known when it will explode. After reprogramming Ryan's phone into the tracking device, the Doctor finds a place where the onion was taken. They track it to the warehouse, where they encounter another newcomer who has just hatched from the onion. After examining the warehouse, it becomes clear that this onion was taken away by a guy named Rahul, who connected her with the disappearance of his sister, and when the stranger came out of the onion, he killed Rahula with a cold. Exploring the remnants of the onion, the Doctor realizes that she urgently needs a sonic screwdriver, so she creates it from what she could find in the warehouse.
Graham calls a friend and tells you where the sphere is. Intercepting and neutralizing it, the Doctor discovers that they are actually in front of them biological weapons, consisting of organic material and Collection Coils, intended for the accumulation of information. And at the moment they contain information about Karl. The group is attacked by an alien who calls himself Tzim-Sha, a member of the belligerent stenza race. At the moment, Tsim-Sha performs a ritual of hunting, and Karl is his prey. Yasmin indicates that Rahula’s sister was the victim of a previous hunt. The doctor believes that Tzim-Sha uses the Reel Collect dishonestly and demands to abandon the hunt and leave the Earth, but the stenza says that DNA bombs were used so that no one would disturb him in the hunt.
Tsim-Sha escapes with loaded data about Karl, the Doctor and her companions decide to save the guy. They find out that Karl works for a construction company and operates a crane. The doctor is trying to persuade Carl to jump from his cock to the next, but the guy is afraid. When he is solved, Tsim-Sha grabs him. As a result of this, the Doctor herself is forced to jump over to Karl’s tap. Attracting the attention of the stenza, the Doctor remembers who she is, and demands that the alien leave the Earth. Tsim-Sha does not want to listen to her and activates the DNA bomb. However, as it turned out, the Time Lady had already taken them out of people and put them back into the Reel Coils, after which Tzim-Sha swallowed them along with information about Karl. While the stenza is trying to leave Earth, Grace, and Graham helping her, destroy the Collection Coil, but Grace is mortally wounded and dies.
Ryan records a video in which he recognizes how important a grandmother was in his life, after which he again and again tries to learn to ride a bicycle in order to appreciate her support. After the funeral, Grace Doctor announces that she must find her TARDIS , which means leave the Earth. Finding new clothes for themselves and having designed a device for moving, she says goodbye to the satellites and teleports. The doctor is in the middle of space and realizes that the satellites have moved with her and the TARDIS is not here.
Production
The first episode of the eleventh season of “ Doctor Who ” marks the beginning of a new era: it is not only the first episode of the Thirteenth Doctor played by Jody Wittaker , starting with the final scene of “ Twice in Time ”, but also the first episode in which Chris Chibnell acts as the main scriptwriter and an executive producer who took responsibility for the series after the departure of Stephen Moffat (held both positions between 2010 and 2017 [1] ). Chibnell has previously written episodes for the series: " 42 " (2007), " Hungry Earth " (2010), " Dinosaurs on a Spaceship " and " The Power of Three " (2012). Also executive producers, along with Chibnel, were Matt Stravens and Sam Hoyle [2] [3] .
On February 20, 2018, the BBC Worldwide showcase featured a new series logo created by the creative association Little Hawk and incorporating a special line that crossed out the inscription [4] . In the same month, Murray Gold, the regular composer of the series, announced his retirement and noted that another person would write music for the eleventh season [5] . On June 26, 2018, it became known that a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatory, Shogun Akinola, would become a new composer [6] .
Casting
“The Woman Who Fell to Earth” is the first full episode of “Doctor Who” featuring Jody Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. Her predecessor, Peter Capaldi , left the show after the tenth season, which became his third and last [7] . The last time Kapaldi played his character, the Twelfth Doctor , in the Christmas episode of 2017 [8] . In February 2017, Moffat revealed that Chibnell was trying to persuade the actor to stay for another season, but he failed. [9] .
The search for a new actor for the role of Doctor began in 2017, after Chibnell completed work on the third season of the series “ Murder on the Beach ” for the TV channel ITV . When choosing a new actor for Chibnell had the last word, however, the votes of Charlotte Moore and Pierce Wenger, responsible for the content and the heads of the BBC drama department, respectively, also had weight. [10] . On July 16, 2017, immediately after the completion of the Wimbledon men's championship final, it was announced that the next incarnation of the Doctor would be played by Jody Wittaker [7] .
In addition, new satellites appear in the episode of the Doctor. Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill played Graham, Ryan and Jaz respectively [11] [12] . Actress Sheron D. Clark also appears in the series, in the role of Ryan's grandmother and Graham's wife, Grace [11] [13] [14] . Also among the invited actors you can notice Johnny Dixon and Samuel Oatley [15] [16] .
Shooting
The director's chair of this episode, as well as the seventh, which is included with him in the first production unit, was taken by Jamie Childs. Also, Childs filmed a teaser in which Jody Whittaker was first introduced as the Thirteenth Doctor [3] [17] .
Preparations for the shooting of the first episode began in late October 2017 [3] and should have been completed by the end of the year [2] [10] [18] . Nevertheless, the filming process began earlier than planned, in November 2017 [19] . It was decided that the eleventh season would be more cinematic, so operators for the first time in the history of the project used Cooke and Angénieux wide angle lenses [20] .
Promotion
The season's first teaser was released during the 2018 FIFA World Cup final on July 15, 2018, almost exactly one year after Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor [7] [21] . Whittaker, Gill, Cole, Chibnell and Strevens promoted the panel show at the Comic-Con in San Diego on July 19, 2018, on which the first trailer was released [23] .
