Lakato

Lacatoh near one of the islands of British New Guinea, 1885

Lakatoi ( English lakatoi ) - a sailing vessel used by the Papuans of New Guinea for coastal navigation for commercial purposes. Currently, it is widely used as a recreational facility in the tourism business [1] .

Design Description

The lacquer case was made up of three or four pies that carried a frame-shaped platform of bamboo stems. It housed goods for sale and exchange trade. Sails were made from wicker mats and, as a rule, were made in the form of claw cancer. However, sometimes they were made quadrangular or elliptical. Often it was possible to meet ships that carried five or six sails that stretched on poles [1] . The main material for the sails was the leaves of the sago tree [2] .
